The Pittsburgh Pastel Artists League is a new kind of group both in
longevity and guidelines.

We do not screen work for membership.
We believe in supporting the medium of pastel and pastel
painters.
A broad consensus is that many do not understand the purity and
stability of pastels; we hope to address that issue.
It is the purest medium.  A good quality pastel has the least
amount of binders to hold the color together; less than any other
medium.
We share ideas and news about new materials via E-letters.
E-letters are our main source of communication.
We  schedule paintouts.... get-togethers where we paint, have
lunch, a short meeting, then paint again, and have a critique.
Our artists' experience range from professional to beginner and
everything in-between.  Some of our artists have been featured
in art publications, did demonstrations, taught classes, and won
prestigious awards
.
We feature artists achievements below.
Gail Beem
Gail painted this piece at Hartwood Acres last August during a PPAL Paintout.  She said when she
got there she had a hard time deciding what to paint then noticed light coming through the trees and
across the ground in front of the house.  That intrigued her.  She said she usually doesn't do
buildings, but found the little part of the house sticking out above the bushes delightful.
This piece is in the SAMA Exhibit for 2011.
Gail was asked to give a talk on her process  of painting from start to finish.
